yoga essaouira meditation retreats holidays september 2013 moroccoFor an expert, independent view on the experience of going away with us, see Queen of Retreats' (the independent healthy holidays review site) entry on Satvada here.

'I have attended Satvada's summer retreat in South West France twice now; each time in a beautiful setting in the middle of peaceful countryside. I cannot express how relaxing and nuturing the entire experience is, something I'm dreaming of throughout these cold winter nights! The atmosphere created by Lucia and co is so laid-back and there's lots of time for lounging around in between the meditation and yoga. Great food, great company and great feeling after the week of calm.'  Holly Lambden, London

'I just wanted to write to thank you for a lovely weekend in Suffolk, and also for the lift to the train station. I really feel like I have learned a lot from the past couple of days - from both the yoga and mindfulness classes, and from the other people on retreat. It was also really great to allow myself some time to go for a run, and the massages were wonderful!' Jan, Somerset

'The retreat in France with Satvada was perfect. Delicious vegan food prepared on site, wonderful accommodation in an old farmhouse surrounded by beautiful grounds with a swimming pool and yoga twice a day. Warm weather allowed us to practice outside with just the sounds of the birds. Afternoon sessions took the form of restorative yoga and mindfulness meditation, and were a lovely balance to the dynamic morning sessions. All were suited to any level of experience. The surrounding countryside is steeped in history and to my delight, there was a bicycle I was able to use. A thoroughly enjoyable, relaxing break with like-minded people - plenty of laughter, but me-space too!' Terry, London

'I can't recommend Satvada enough for the first-time yoga retreater! All my fears about being too inexperienced at yoga to go on a retreat were instantly allayed in the first class. Lucia's teaching style is wonderfully personal so that everybody in the class is looked after and encouraged individually. I felt a deeper connection with my practice developing over the course of the retreat that has left me with more commitment to and enthusiasm for yoga-a great boost for the novice student! Lucia's experience, knowledge and attitude were truly inspiring. The evening meditation sessions were relaxing and energising but also gave us an insight into the benefits of integrating yoga and meditation into daily life to reduce stress and increase wellbeing. All this was accompanied by huge doses of laughter, a great mix of people, delicious food, a stunning Riad and the beauty and hospitality of Morocco. I can't wait for the next one.' Elena Greer, London

'I had a great time on retreat by the Moroccan seaside - the yoga was a perfect balance between challenge and consolidation, and I can feel my core muscles and arm muscles in particular have strengthened. Even with my back and hips being quite delicate, having had physio before I went to Morocco, I was able to achieve so much during the yoga sessions. Lucia concentrates on us all adopting the right posture, which works to support and enhance our core strength and not cause any damage. She nurtured us to achieve as much as possible in a way that was 'right' for us. I found the teaching so professional and thorough - Lucia gave us all confidence and I found myself achieving things I would never have expected to be possible. Yoga on the roof in the sun in the mornings, and the restorative yoga in the evenings made for such a beautiful experience! Outside of the yoga, there was so much to do around and about: camel or horse riding, tennis, massage or beauty treatments, walking along miles of beach, and exploring off-the-beaten track, plus discovering nearby Essaouira, resting by the pool or on the balcony, and generally breathing in the lovely environment of the Riad - all this made for a marvellous holiday. And the staff could not have been more charming, helpful and friendly. The food was delicious and healthy. I could go on and on as I had such a wonderful time - Morocco, the venue by the sea, the yoga, the people; it all surpassed my best expectations and I'm already saving for next year, when I will tag on some additional days!' - Claire Rowan, Suffolk

'I have practised yoga on and off for most of my life, but had got seriously rusty in recent years and thought a yoga retreat might be a good way to kick-start into regular practice again. I looked at a few online before finding Satvada, and immediately felt reassured by the description of the retreat, not to mention the idea of visiting Morocco and having some winter sun!
Lucia was very helpful during the enquiry and booking process, and the retreat was extremely well organised. My husband and I had some reservations about sharing a holiday with strangers (having never done anything like this before), but we needn't have worried as everybody was lovely and it was very nice to get to know new people, whilst still having plenty of opportunity to do our own thing when we wanted to. The Riad near Essaouira in Morocco was absolutely beautiful, the food was fantastic and there was a great range of activities on offer.
The yoga tuition was excellent - Lucia is a gentle and knowledgeable instructor who dealt well with a mixed ability group, and was able to encourage each of us to do our personal best. I found the mindfulness practices really helpful too. Since we returned home, I'm pleased to say I have felt inspired to practice almost daily and have joined a local class. Overall the retreat was a very relaxing and enjoyable experience, and I would have no hesitation recommending it to anyone.' - Frances Weston. Northamptonshire.

'I was a little apprehensive about the daily yoga sessions as I'm not a regular practitioner - but this retreat was just the perfect combination of relaxation, yoga and sightseeing. I'll never forget the warmth of Moroccan hospitality, the vivid colours of the souk or practising Sun Salutations under a cloudless blue sky. Thank you!' - Karen Higginbottom, Wales

yin yang yoga april hotel tigmi marrakech marrakesh spring 2013 morocco
' As soon as I arrived at Hotel Tigmi in the foothills of the Atlas mountains, I knew this was going to be a special few days - and I wasn't wrong. The hotel is an oasis in the mad rush of life. You can't help but unwind there. The hosts on this retreat, Lucia and Jodie, were warm, welcoming and professional and thought of every detail to make my stay comfortable, companionable and memorable. The yoga sessions - energising in the morning and calming/relaxing in the evening together with the mindfulness/meditation were just what my frazzled and tightly wired body needed. I would recommend this magical retreat in Morocco and Satvada Retreats to anyone. I look forward to another holiday or weekend away with them in the future.'   - Julia Bennett, Newbury

(Commenting on the June 2012 Tigmi retreat): 'Just to say a big thank you for such a fantastic retreat. I can't wait for the next one...'
- Kate Malleson, London

'Five days on Satvada's Tigmi yoga retreat in Morocco felt like a two-week holiday. I arrived tired and tense from the stresses of everyday life and left with balance restored and every muscle stretched. Having the two different yoga sessions at the start and end of the day - flow and restorative, respectively - worked really well and gave me a real insight into all the benefits yoga can have on body and mind. The afternoon workshop sessions were a good chance to try new poses and inversions in a safe way (things that are not easy to try in regular yoga classes). It was also great to start to think about aspects of meditation and mindfulness. There was no better backdrop than Morocco to rejuvenate myself.'
 - Claire Tilsone, London

'I thought Hotel Tigmi was great...so atmospheric and pretty. I really enjoyed both evening and morning yoga sessions and the walking from Hotel Tigmi was an unexpected highlight. I will definitely come again - dates allowing.'
 - Sally, Chelmsford

South-West France retreats

luxury france yoga mindfulness retreat august september 2013
'I am writing this to say how much I enjoyed the retreat at the Chateau. I am a complete novice, and had only minimal yoga experience, although some of the others were regular yoga types. At the retreat we had two sessions a day, early morning and evening, with the evening session - more mindfulness based. Congratulations to our brilliant teacher, Lucia, who guided us through all of the exercises and poses, suiting our varied levels of experience. We chose to get to the retreat by train, and the transfer from Angouleme rail was easy.
The accommodation was really good, a large comfortable bed, in the sort of huge room you would expect in a chateau, but with an up to date en suite. The food was great, we all breakfasted a la francais after the morning yoga, and then an alfresco vegetarian lunch, freshly prepared, which was different every day, and finally dinner in the evening, again alfresco and freshly prepared. The chateau grounds were amazing: a large swimming pool, table tennis, badminton and loungers for just meditation and reading. It was nice to get away from TV and PC, but the chateau has wi-fi should you need it. We had a good few walks around the local area, hosted by the two delightful french sisters who run the place, super countryside, very refreshing. Overall, a brilliant experience, and one that we intend to repeat.' Tony Hannam, UK

'Thank you for such a wonderful week of yoga and relaxation at the Chateau. What a truly beautiful and relaxing setting. Was such a delight to get up and make our way to the outdoor yoga setting to start the day. The food was plentiful and fabulous, perhaps because of our wonderful chef and entertainer Francis! The hosts Natahlie and Blaudine were so charming and lovely, it felt like we were staying with good friends. We were so lucky with the warm weather. Being able to swim in that gorgeous pool, relax in the hammock, play badminton or ride through the nearby fields just made it all the more wonderful. Thanks again for a guiding us through our lovely yoga classes and bringing us all together.' Georgia, Australia

'The retreat was for me, more than anything, an exercise for the mind. I enjoyed the breathing exercises as a massage of my internal organs. The Chateau is breathtaking and a perfect spot for practising mindfulness. Thank you for five invigorating days'. Rebekka Lewin, Copenhagen, Denmark

'The weekend was perfect and a brilliant antidote to a busy life! I enjoyed every minute of it, and will certainly join you again, hopefully next year.' Allison, Suffolk

'I loved the weekend and felt very relaxed driving home. I found the yoga stimulating and, although I have been practicing for a long time, I learnt lots and liked your approach so thank you. The accommodation at Potash barns is great; food, ambiance also lovely! I also think the mindfulness meditation combined with yoga is a great combination... they really compliment each other and Shamash is a great teacher. So it's all good from me and I hope to be able to come to another retreat....abroad if possible!'
- Maggi Reid, London

'The mindfulness and yoga weekend far exceeded my expectations. The food and company were great, with the group (tutors and attendees alike) gelling and very relaxed in each other's company. Overall there was a great balance of relaxed atmosphere and a nicely spread schedule of practice, free time, and delicious food! It has also been great that the relaxed feelings, and mindfulness, have spilled into the beginning of the week, and being back at work. Thank you all for such a lovely weekend; I am already considering joining future retreats.'
- Gill, Cambridgeshire

'Thank you for a wonderfully restorative weekend at Potash Barns, Suffolk. It is rare to find a package that m ore than lives up to its promotional description. Before we arrived we were a little concerned about our suitability for the classes, both in terms of experience and personal fitness. However, we were immediately reassured by the small class s. We also really enjoyed the accommodation, our own private lounge, friendly hosts and the walks in lovely peaceful surroundings of the Suffolk countryside. The food did not disappoint and was another highlight. I was impressed by the lengths taken by the hosts to accommodate all the dietary requirements and we loved the great variety of vegetarian dishes; also, time spent just chatting. I am already looking forward to the next weekend.'
- Sally and Geoff, Chelmsford.

'I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Lucia and her weekend yoga retreats. The yoga teaching was excellent, set in lovely rural Suffolk, and with lovely vegetarian food. The accommodation and hospitality were warm and welcoming, and I returned home feeling restored and relaxed. I hope to enjoy another escape with YA Retreats soon. Thank you.'
- Rhonda Martin, London

'A great weekend; thank you very much. Excellent meditations, calming yoga classes - my favourite part of the weekend. The pilates moves were - although very challenging - wonderfully explained, especiallly when you are not sure how to move certain muscles! The hosts were incredibly welcoming, and the veggie food superb; lots of it, and a great variety. I am only sorry I missed the cakes!'
Catherine Mayes, Chelmsford.

'I thought I would write to you to say what an amazing weekend I have just had. I can't tell you how different I feel; it's hard to explain, but I live a busy life and really struggle to relax and let go of everyday worries. This weekend, I let go of everything. I can even say that I am ready to make some changes in my life and start to slow things down, and take time out - even if it's only for 10 minutes a day, as you recommend. I even found myself saying to my husband how much he would love it, and how good it would be for his mental attitude and busy lifestyle!'
- Kay Gibbins, Bedfordshire

'YA Retreats' weekends are wonderfully relaxing. The yoga classes suit from beginners to advanced and are relaxed, informal and totally unpretentious. Held in a beautiful Suffolk location with a fantastically chic yoga studio overlooking the farm and surrounding land there is yummy vegetarian food on offer (and lots of it) with just the next class, a stroll, read or a beauty treatment to look forward to....I can't wait until next time.'
- Claire Salter, Essex

'Just to say thank you for such a special weekend in Suffolk. The going home bag has been very fruitful too as I set myself up with a mat and candle yesterday and did all I could remember - and felt the benefit right away. The whole weekend was so beautifully prepared and packaged and had quite an impact on me. After such good food on retreat, I even had a new yearning for lots of fresh vegetables, and my house is now full of them!'
- Isabel Lewis, Surrey

'The Suffolk weekend retreat was just what I needed to restore body and soul at the end of a stressful week. The old, newly converted barns are 'away from it all' in the most peaceful Suffolk countryside imaginable. We were looked after very well, with delicious, home-cooked meals, and the timetable was relaxed and unhurried. The yoga was dynamic or gentle, just as one wanted, and took place in a beautiful purpose-built studio a minute's walk from the barns'
- Amy Lumsden, Essex

Day retreats

'My daughter and I recently attended a day retreat near Chelmsford. The morning was paced really well for us. The numbers were just right and we thoroughly enjoyed the style of instruction and care. The afternoon was spent practising restorative yoga, which neither of us tried before. We both liked using the bolster to relax on, and felt very calm by the end of the session. Lunch was delicious. We will be booking a retreat with Satvada again.' Terry Minshaw, Essex

'I just wanted to say - many thanks for a wonderful yoga day on Sunday. I felt great afterwards, and The Retreat Farm is such a beatiful location.' Sarah Seed, Kent

'Sunday's retreat turned out to be a fabulous day. Although the practice was in my opinion hard, it was satisfying but most of all fun. The afternoon's relaxation - and my friend agreed with me - was with out doubt the best I have ever experienced. I look forward to 2012's Day Retreats with great anticipation - and thank you both for a wonderful day.'
- Paul Roberts, Essex

'Just a note to thank you for such a super and energising time - it really was perfect. You are the perfect hostess and you both made us feel so welcome and relaxed, and inspired. The food was fab and the yoga excellent - I went to yoga today and was far more bendy!'
- Claire Rowan, Suffolk

I really enjoyed the meditation day on Sunday. Mindfulness meditation was relatively new to me (although I have been practising yoga for many years and have touched some aspects of it) and I found the introduction into the different aspects very inspiring.' Dirk Peltzer, London.

'Thank you for a wonderful day Sunday. Mindfulness is of course right up my street! I feel much calmer from the experience and look forward to doing a lot more.' Silke Ukena, Danbury.

‘Even though I'm a yoga beginner, I didn't feel out of my depth at all. Instead I came away feeling calm, nurtured and inspired to find a class in my area. The teachers were very supportive and I particularly enjoyed the thoughtful quotes that were read out as we practised different poses. Above all the venue is in a supremely tranquil setting, with the only sound during our afternoon meditation session being birdsong drifting in through the open windows.’
- Elizabeth Evans, Yorkshire

‘I had a fantastic time at the day retreat on Sunday; the location, the yoga room and the people were absolutely lovely - and of course the yoga itself and Jodie and Lucia sharing it with us.. a big thank you.
I have a regular home practice and don’t have much free time to get to classes during the week, so a whole day to learn and practice is so wonderful. I have done a few sessions since Sunday and i feel it has really helped me to deepen my practice. Yoga never ceases to amaze and fascinate me, so thank you again for sharing your yin and yang with us.’
- Gayle Buckley, Essex

‘Fantastic day retreat, beautiful location, delicious food and inspiring yin and yang yoga sessions which complemented each other perfectly. Will definitely be coming along again’
- Vikki Stevenson, Essex

‘I have now attended four one day retreats. Each retreat has a different character and offers a complete experience, with a balance of flowing active practice followed by stillness and meditation. I have begun to notice the benefits of regular attendance in improvements in my personal yoga practice. In addition I have developed a sense of wellbeing and resilience in my daily life which is the result of regular meditation. During my last retreat I really noticed that I could relax and meditate when practising the yin postures, as my body and mind had learnt to let go.’
