Nestling deep in quintessential Tuscan countryside, yet under an hour from Pisa airport, we are delighted to have found our perfect Italian retreat: a characterful farmhouse and former Buddhist monastery, with just seven self-contained apartments, perched at the top of a quiet hillside. Views from the terraces and surrounding hillsides are breathtaking, revealing a hilly landscape of unspoiled forestland and vineyards. This is a true retreat, and one for you if you’re looking for a rural escape during which we will explore different aspects of nurturing yoga and mindfulness, combined with truly scrumptious home-cooked, locally sourced Italian cuisine, optional on-site ayurvedic massages, and a half-day trip to the nearby coast.

Why this retreat?

In a nutshell

After some years of consistently receiving requests from our lovely guests to run a retreat in Italy, we’re excited to announce this planned for 2020 yoga and mindfulness retreat.

This offering ticks our extensive boxes for a perfect Italian retreat: a rural, traditional farmhouse in an outstanding natural setting; a handful of comfortable en-suite apartments; truly welcoming hosts, one of whom is Italian; exceptional home-spun food with an irresistible Italian and local flavour; a beautiful, fully equipped, tucked away yoga and meditation studio, previously enjoyed and utilised by Buddhist monks; and optional on-site ayurvedic massages and treatments.

Half way through the retreat, we will also be offering an organised half-day trip to the nearby little-known Tuscan coastline, around 40 minutes’ drive away, with the chance to sample a local restaurant and swim in the sea!

Aligned with Satvada’s ethos, this will be a highly personal, accessible, tiny group retreat, with just seven en-suite apartments, allowing for an anticipated group of around six-to-ten guests.

Our host farmhouse sits at the top of a steep hill and is surrounded by a captivating Tuscan landscape of dense forestland, rolling vineyards and scattered traditional villages. The nearest village to our retreat centre is around 30 minutes’ walk away. You’ve been warned: the climb back up is steep, and super-dark at night!

Formerly used as a small Buddhist monastery, we were immediately taken with the tone of tranquillity and contemplation at the heart of this special place. Tucked away at the back of the house, the yoga and meditation studio has a particularly calming feel, and is surrounded by trees and Buddha statues.

Seven en-suite apartments ensure a very (and unusually, industry-wise) small group, with all the benefits this can bring - the chance to meet, and get to know well, like-minded people; plenty of individual attention in the yoga and mindfulness classes; and an overall personal vibe that Satvada has become known for.

Whilst the apartments vary in their décor and aspect, all have their own private outside space. Some have private terraces with views stretching towards surrounding deep forestland. All are comfortable rather than luxurious, and entirely in keeping with this setting.

Whilst there is no swimming pool due to challenges brought by the steep terrain, there is a small Jacuzzi, from which to gaze out at the landscape. We are also excited that there is also a newly built yoga terrace near the house, yet in the midst of trees - a setting we’ll definitely be enjoying if the weather allows.

Yoga and meditation classes

Outdoor meditation classes
We are known for our accessible, nurturing approach to yoga and mindfulness, often attracting complete beginners to yoga and meditation, or/and those who are dipping their toe into a retreat for the first time. It’s an absolute joy and privilege to host beginners and more experienced students alike.

On this retreat, we’ll be offering three practice periods on the average day: two yoga and mindfulness sessions of 90 minutes each - one in the morning, one early evening. Also: a 30-minute before-lunch mindfulness class. All sessions are entirely optional and tailored for all levels.

Typically, each morning class will be more active and flowing by nature; evening class will explore soft, contemplative elements of the yoga tradition such as yoga nidra (deep guided relaxation, enjoyed lying down) and super-gentle restorative yoga. All will be underpinned by mindfulness: an invitation to attend to our present moment experience with gentleness and curiosity.

On one day of the retreat, there will be just one class in the morning - the rest of the day will be dedicated to taking a trip to the nearby seaside.

All yoga mats, bolsters and blankets are provided. 

Foodie treats

Tasty, healthy meals, made with fresh ingredients
Our regular guests know us for working with our trusted hosts to offer only the very best, tastiest, menu that reflects the cuisines of the country we are in - always organic and locally sourced where possible.

Juice diets and detoxes are definitely not our particular thing; you will treated to home-baked cakes and desserts, balanced by a plethora of healthy. zingy salads and seasonal soup and vegetable dishes. Think gorgeous Tuscan cheeses, olive oil sourced from surrounding groves, and the option to sample local Italian wines (at extra cost).

All food is vegetarian by default; with advance notice, vegan and gluten-free diets can be catered for. As is usual on retreats, the group comes together for each meal.

We find meal-times one of the (many) true joys of being on retreat: taking time to savour a meal, exchanging experiences with fellow guests, sharing the bounties of the land, having everything prepared and cleared away - really, what’s not to love?

A word or two about your teacher

Teacher: Lucia Cockcroft
Satvada co-founder Lucia Cockcroft will teach this retreat. Lucia has been practising yoga and meditation for over 20 years and teaching for eleven. Lucia has a deep love of yoga and mindfulness, aiming to deliver classes in a nourishing, inclusive way. Her yoga classes are informed by her own yoga and meditation practice, underpinned by mindful awareness and the breath.

Over the years, she has been privileged to have enjoyed teachings, retreats and training from well known yoga and meditation teachers such as Judith Lasater, Bo Forbes, Sarah Powers, Jon Kabat-Zinn and Christina Feldman. Most recently, she has participated in retreats and trainings led by Uma, Martin Aylward, Mindfulness in Schools and Bangor University (studying Mindfulness Based Approaches at postgraduate level for two years). She is ia long-term student of London yin teacher, Norman Blair.

What's included?

  • Comfortable en-suite apartment with a charming and rustic, rather than luxury, feel. Apartments can be for solo use (strictly limited) or shared with one other known guest.

  • Three yoga and mindfulness classes over most days, excluding the first and last day of the retreat. On the day of the half-day beach trip, there will just be one morning class.

  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner. On the first day, dinner will be included; on the last day, breakfast will be included. On our half-day out to the beach, lunch will be excluded, as we’ll try out a local restaurant or cafe.

  • Half-day trip to a nearby beach (meal excluded).

What's not included?

  • Flights and airport transfers (approx 30 euros each way)

  • Travel insurance

  • Any massages or other treatments booked

  • Any wine or alcohol

We arrange a group transfer for guests arriving on the recommend flights. Transfers cost approx 60 Euros return. If you would like to take an alternative flight, transfer arrangements can be made. Please contact us for further information.

A typical day (may change)

On retreat, your days will mostly look something like this (please note: on the day of the arranged half-day trip to the coast, there will be no classes):

  • 7.45-9.15am: Mindful yoga
  • 9.30am: Breakfast
  • 12.30-1pm: Mindfulness session
  • 1.30pm: Light Lunch
  • 4.30pm: Afternoon tea
  • 5.45-7.15pm: Gentle yoga, mindfulness
  • 7.30pm: Three-course evening dinner

All meals are vegetarian by default.
