Why this retreat?

In a nutshell

We have been offering Wellbeing Weekends in our favourite city, evocative Marrakech, for the past six years, and are thrilled to now be rolling out the same format in an exclusive small group setting that exudes style and luxury.

Table for two by the pool
Our British hosts for this three-night weekend retreat have meticulously restored this building over a five-year period, to its former glory - and it now runs as a sumptuous, luxurious eight-bedroom Riad, recommended the The Times newspaper as one of the leading Riad's in Marrakech.

As always for our Wellbeing Weekends, we take exclusive hire, and keep the group unusually small; we anticipate around ten guests. The Thursday-to-Sunday schedule will include six 90-minute yoga and mindfulness classes; an on-site massage at the Riad's own spa, all food and luxury accommodation - please see schedule box on right-hand side for more details.

Hammam
The rest of the time has been left free, for you to choose how you need to spend it – whether that's to relax on the roof terrace, take additional spa treatments, enjoy a dip in the jacuzzi or courtyard pool, or perhaps to do some shopping in the surrounding medina. The choice is entirely yours, with absolutely no compulsion to attend all sessions.

As such, this weekend is intended to be balanced and deeply nurturing, and will not suit those looking for an intensive retreat experience; for example, one that incorporates periods of silence or detox diets (this is offered plentifully and expertly elsewhere).

It should also be noted that the yoga offered will be relatively gentle and accessible to all. There will be an opening evening session on the first day of the retreat, then two 90-minute sessions on the Friday and Saturday. The teacher for this long weekend, Lucia, Satvada's co-founder, is an experienced, highly trained yoga and mindfulness teacher. Her teaching blends elements of hatha yoga, mindfulness, yin, yoga nidra and restorative yoga (for more about Lucia, scroll down).

Morning sessions will be more flowing and energetic (though very accessible), whilst evening classes will be very gentle and meditative in flavour. Yoga and meditation sessions for all levels will be held on the lovely roof terrace, or downstairs in the atmospheric courtyard.

Sumptuous accommodation

.
Traditionally decorated double bedroom
The Arabic-speaking British owners spent five years lovingly restoring the building by local craftsmen and artisans to its current incarnation.

The end result is a quite stunning blend of ancient tradition and modern comfort – an enclave of cocooned calm in the heart of the city.

We were immediately struck by the Riad's exceptional ambience and service levels; also by its amenities, which include (unusually for Marrakech) a warm heated swimming pool, a small roof-top spa, and a jacuzzi.

Breakfast on the terrace
Common areas include an intimate sitting room and a dining room by the courtyard, in addition to the roof terrace.

As to be expected with this standard of venue, meals are delicious, varied and home-cooked (and always vegetarian), enjoyed on the roof terrace or in the dining room by the courtyard.

As always on our retreats, we include afternoon tea with home made goodies (you deserve it!).

Our teacher

Teacher: Lucia Cockcroft
This retreat will be led by Lucia Cockcroft – co-founder of Satvada retreats and sister organisation, Yoga at the Mill, a highly-regarded yoga and mindfulness studio in Chelmsford, Essex.

Lucia has been practising yoga and meditation for 20 years, and is passionate about the natural synergies between the two ancient disciplines.

She has been teaching both yoga and meditation for ten years, and recently completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Mindfulness Approaches (to Teaching 1) from the University of Bangor.

She is privileged to count Sarah Powers, Bo Forbes, Tara Fraser, Norman Blair, Jack Kornfield, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Christina Feldman and John Peacock as amongst her yoga and meditation teachers – having attended retreats or training events with these wonderful teachers over the years.
