Boutique New Year Yoga Retreat in Marrakech

December 29, 2017 - January 3, 2018

This retreat in short

New Year is our favourite time of year in Marrakech, when day-time winter sun contrasts with crisp, cool evenings and the aroma of wood fires mingles with the call to prayer and the hum of music from Jemaa el Fna square. We'd love you to join us in a beautiful, quiet, trusted Riad not far from the main square, for a very special start to the year. This New Year Yoga Retreat, will offer a healthy balance of relaxation and planned activity: twice-daily courtyard yoga, delivered in a mindful, accessible way; two guided walks (one in central Marrakech, one in the Atlas mountains on New Year's Eve); and wonderful home cooking in one of our favourite Riads, renowned for its evocative atmosphere, amazing cuisine and warm welcome.

Why this retreat?

In a nutshell

Marrakech at New Year offers a tempting tonic from post-Christmas blues and grey skies at home. Temperatures average 20 degrees during the day, with an often dazzling quality of light.

If you have time off over New Year and would like to do something special and different, we'd love you to join our Marrakech New Year yoga escape, based at a beautiful Riad in the heart of Marrakech's ancient medina.

Like all the best Riads (traditional Moroccan townhouse), our trusted host venue, which we have used for many years, is an oasis of calm in the midst of the busy medina, yet is a modest eight minutes' walk from the hustle and colour of the main square.

During this five-night, six-day retreat, you'll enjoy a guided tour of the old Marrakech medina, allowing a good orientation for further exploration or shopping! Twice daily yoga and meditation classes will be taught in the atmospheric courtyard.

New Year's Eve will bring a guided walk (and lunch) in the nearby fabulous Atlas mountains, followed by a long, late, lovingly prepared dinner, with a half-bottle of bubbly wine included.

Our beautiful main Riad

Alfresco dining
Owned by a French couple who are themselves yoga practitioners, the Riad has just six lovely rooms, all of which are en-suite and traditionally furnished. The bedrooms can be described as comfortable and beautifully furnished.

In addition to the lovely central countryard, where we enjoy our yoga practice, the Riad's relaxed communal areas include a library with roaring fire and roof terrace, perfect for soaking up winter sun.

Despite being in the heart of the Marrakech medina, once the door is closed, the bustle and rush of the souks feel miles away, and you know you've found a true city centre retreat.

Daily meals are lovingly prepared from scratch by the Riad's own chefs, who learned their craft from their own mothers and grandparents. Food is vegetarian, plentiful and fabulous, with a good balance of fresh, healthy vegetables and local produce, mixed with a sprinkling of home-made cakes and puddings. Think orange or apple cake for afternoon tea and chocolate pudding or fresh local oranges for evening dessert.

Courtyard yoga and meditation

Yoga in the courtyard
The daily morning yoga class will be dynamic (but accessible) hatha flow, suitable for all levels - from complete beginners, to experienced students.

The evening session will be much slower and more meditative: a combination of gentle movement, meditation and deep relaxation. Both sessions are 90 minutes' long.

The Riad countryard is a wonderfully atmospheric setting for our practice sessions, with a central plunge pool fringed by trees and plants, and lit by candles in the evening.

Our New Year teacher

Sarah Nunn - our yoga teacher
Our lovely teacher, Sarah Nunn, has a naturally mindful, sensitive and inclusive approach to teaching yoga. Her love of yoga and meditation shine through and she has a natural talent for putting students at ease and guiding them through postures to their own level.

Sarah teaches an accessible vinyasa flow for the morning sessions and a stress-busting blend of restorative, yin yoga and mindfulness meditation for the evening classes.

Sarah is currently studying to be a Yoga Therapist, and her sensitive approach to teaching reflects this training.

For a real treat, head to the modern yet atmospheric Le Bain Bleu, five minutes' walk away from our guest Riads, for a hammam, massage, pedicure, facial, or combination of these!

We have long been enjoying treatments here, and recommended this lovely place to guests. The hammam - traditional Moroccan bathing experience - is a must for any visit to Marrakech.

Advanced booking is absolutely necessary at this busy time of year - we recommend contacting Le Bain Bleu directly, to secure a treatment slot. When booking a slot, please bear in mind the retreat schedule, and that New Year's Eve and New Year's Day may be busy with retreat activities.

The cost of treatments are not included in the cost of your retreat.

Thank you to Satvada for a great retreat
I was a little apprehensive about the daily yoga sessions as I'm not a regular practitioner - but this retreat was just the perfect combination of relaxation, yoga and sightseeing. Thank you!
