Why this retreat?
The format will echo our long-standing Marrakech Wellbeing Weekends: we include a restoring on-site massage, all yoga and meditation class, en-suite accommodation, and all (fabulous vegetarian) meals. The dates coincide with Easyjet's direct London Luton-Essaouira flights, though there is also the option to fly into (and/or out from) Marrakech, a three-hour taxi transfer away.
With just seven large, individually crafted bedrooms and suites - designed in the style of a traditional Riad - our retreat eco-lodge is formed of a series of gardens and terracotta terraces, set quietly in an oasis of eucalptus and olive trees.
The venue is totally geared towards rest, relaxation and tranquility, the central focus being a huge terrace and courtyard, exceptional outdoor swimming pool, and a hammam and spa, offering a range of delicious treatments (we can vouch for this!). We include a massage in this long weekend.
The invitation on this retreat is to slow down a few gears, take books, plenty of sun screen, and let everything be taken care of; a chance to 'be' rather than 'do'.
This said, for a sport of gentle shopping or sea-gazing, the arty delights of the beguiling seaside town of Essaouira are 15 minutes away by taxi (taxis cost around seven euros each way).
With just seven suites available, we anticipate a small retreat comprising around ten guests, and a large proportion of solo travellers.
Your meals will be prepared lovingly by the on-side chef - food is wholesome, rustic, vegetarian; organic and local where possible.
There are plenty of tucked-away spots for alone-time, including hammocks, private terraces, sun loungers by the pool and a large indoor lounge area with sofas and cushions.
The low-lying buildings have been sensitively designed with the environment in mind: power is derived from a mixture of solar and plant waste such as olive stones.
This part of rural Morocco is characterised by blue, terracotta and white vistas, argan and oilve trees; and a rural way of life where donkeys, goats, turtles and sheep live in rhythm with the land. A retreat here is about slowing down and drinking in the sights, smells and colours of north Africa.
Yoga and meditation
There will be two daily 90-minute classes, including a session on the first evening. Classes are designed for those of all (or none) yoga or meditation experience; our intention is to keep practice sessions as accessible as possible, whilst providing challenge for those with an established practice.
The morning sessions will be mindful hatha yoga, whilst the evening sessions will be slower and more contemplative, with a blend of gentle yoga postures, blended with mindfulness meditation and deep relaxation.
We anticipate morning sessions running from 8.30-10am; evening classes, from 5.30-7pm.
Between classes, your time is your own, whether to read, sleep, sunbathe, or swim, or whether you choose a more active optional pastime such as kite-surfing, horse-riding, or a shopping trip to Essaouira!
Tasty foodie treats
Lucia has trained intensively with leading yoga and meditation teachers, including Sarah Powers, Bo Forbes, Judith Lasater and Christina Feldman, and is currently taking an MSc in Mindfulness Based Approaches at the University of Bangor.
She is passionate about the ability of yoga and meditation to transform how we feel - physically, energetically, emotionally.
All rooms are large and en-suite; all prices are per person:
Triple room suite (very limited)
£499 per person
Twin/double room or suite
£599 per person
Solo occupancy of en-suite double
£699 per person
b) sharing a very large room (laid out as two separate double rooms, without a door linking the two, and sharing a bathroom) with another guest of the same sex.
Rooms are very Moroccan in feel, with lots of individual touches, such as Berber soft furnishings. Some have fireplaces and/or separate living areas. The rooms are large, comfortable and rustic, but not luxurious. They are happily the opposite in feel to a chain hotel.
Is this retreat for me?
This retreat will be suitable for all levels of yoga and meditation experience - from complete beginners, through to those with an established practice.
