    Why book this holiday?

    In a nutshell

We are very excited to be returning to our long-standing Atlas Mountain host venue, an eco-friendly castle nestling in the foothills, to again offer our popular Yoga and Mountain Walking format over the New Year period.

The Satvada team has been spending New Year in Morocco for almost a decade; we are seduced to return at this time of year by the clear skies, winter sun and refreshing change of scene after such a short flight from the UK.

This New Year trip will be based around an enlivening outdoorsy schedule that blends fabulous guided mountain walks from the door with twice-daily yoga (more about the yoga below), fine food, down-time and general good living.:)

As always with these mountain escapes, our intention is to live and eat well, sustained by a balance of physical exercise, sunshine (we hope and expect!), deep rest, nourishing food and the company of like-minded people.

Many guests join us as solo travellers, and particularly benefit from easy, short transfers from Marrakech and a lightly organised schedule.

Whilst the walking can be challenging, and is best described as moderate, it is suitable for anyone of reasonable fitness. Yoga is always tailored to many different levels, and guests are free to do as much or as little as they choose.

We are delighted to welcome our experienced teacher, Daniel Groom, to teach this retreat for us.

Our host venue: Kasbah in the mountains

    The gardens of the casbah
This very special, recently-built Kasbah (Berber castle), is a true retreat. Sitting on its own hill-top, the venue is surrounded with panoramic mountain and sweeping views.

It was designed with the environment in mind, and is surrounded by five hectares of beautifully landscaped gardens, ripe with olives, almonds, figs and pomegranates. Where possible, heating of water is derived directly from the sunshine.

Accommodation is comfortable and spacious (rather than luxurious), with a rustic feel befitting the setting.

Rooms, which are all en-suite, are traditionally designed with Moroccan materials: cedar and eucalyptus wood, red sandstone, hand-made clay tiles, locally-made furniture with Berber motifs. Rooms have views of either the gardens or the sweeping valley below.

Daily yoga, meditation and yoga nidra for everyone

    Daniel Groome
Yoga and meditation are practised in either the dedicated yoga room or, weather permitting, on the roof terrace, where panoramic mountain views can be enjoyed during practice.

We are delighted to be welcoming yoga therapist Daniel Groom to teach this New Year retreat for us. Daniel has been practising yoga for almost two decades and is an experienced, sensitive teacher. He is also a yoga therapist, having trained with highly regarded London school, Yoga Campus.

Daniel's approach is friendly and inclusive, and completely suitable for those of all levels of yoga experience, from complete beginners to guests with an established practice.

Each morning, a 75-minute hatha flow yoga class will stretch and enliven the body in preparation for our walk. The evening's yoga and meditation class will be a far softer, reflective combination of gentle yoga, meditation and yoga nidra (a deep, powerful form of relaxation): the perfect wind-down after the day's activities!

    Daily mountain hiking

    Walking in the Atlas Mountains
Our guided hikes from the door are led by a friendly local mountain guide, who knows the terrain intimately. Whilst walking, we often go through tiny Barber villages and see local people, giving a wonderful insight into local life.

The hiking is often hilly, with scree in places, and so demands a moderate level of fitness. All walks are for between 2.5 and 3 hours, with the exception of the optional extended walk, which is around 5 hours. We recommend you bring one or two walking sticks, especially if you intend to join the long walk.

Please let us know beforehand if you have any injuries or limitations that may make the walking more challenging. Also please be aware that all walks are entirely optional.

    Balancing activity with rest

Although this trip is formed of one of our busier itineraries, we have intentionally left afternoons free to do as you please, whether you opt to read, sunbathe, rest or simply lounge by the lovely outdoor swimming pool (please also note that all yoga sessions and walks are optional.) There is also the possibility of travelling into Marrakech for an afternoon - arranged and paid for directly with the hotel.

On one of the days, usually towards the end of the retreat, there is an option to take an extended all-day hike, on more challenging terrain, and deeper in to the mountains. At the half way point we will stop for lunch, whilst enjoying magnificent views stretching out to the High Atlas and to Marrakech.

We recommend bringing at least one walking stick for this all-day hike.

    Foodie treats: what to expect

    Lemon Drizzle Cake
Food, where possible is locally sourced and seasonal. On this retreat, we offer vegetarian cuisine in the morning and at lunch time. In the evening, there are a selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals.

The venue prides itself on providing employment to people living in the local villages. Chefs have learnt to cook from their family and recipes have passed down through generations. This result in an authentic, typically Moroccan menu. Expect super-fresh vegetable-based lunch buffets, and Tagine and couscous variations for the evening meals, based on seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs.

    New Year's Eve celebrations

We'll see the New Year in with style! A special gala dinner will be served whilst you are entertained by local musicians, to create a fun and authentic atmosphere.

However, if you would prefer an early night, you are of course free to retire to your room whenever you wish. The choice is entirely yours. :)
