Walking & Yoga holiday in the Atlas Mountains, Morocco

Our long-running Atlas Mountains Walking & Yoga holidays are highly recommended by journalists from Marie Claire Magazine and independent review website, Queen of Retreats. Based at a fantastic eco-friendly Berber castle in the Atlas Mountains foothills, and surrounded by five hectares of glorious gardens, we enjoy a relatively busy schedule of three-hour daily guided hikes from the door; two daily mindful and yoga classes; and full board with delicious home-crafted food, sourced where possible from the gardens. Guest rooms are en-suite and boast stunning mountain or garden views. This break will host a maximum of 14 guests, usually attracting a high proportion of solo travellers.

Why this retreat?

In a nutshell

We have been running our sought-after Walking and Yoga holidays in Morocco's glorious Atlas Mountain foothills for the past seven years, after visiting and falling in love with the fabulous hikes (always from the door), quality of light, sweeping panoramas and warmth of the people.

Hosted by a wonderful British owned Kasbah (castle) 45 minutes from Marrakech, yet surrounded by breathtaking mountains and gardens, this trip aims to strike a balance between guided walks, relaxing and living well.

It is the most active of our escapes and will suit those looking for a structured time away: we organise daily moderately challenging three-hour hikes from the door, led by a highly experienced and personable local guide who has extensive knowledge of the terrain. Hikes generally take place after morning yoga and breakfast - meaning we are back in time for a delicious buffet lunch!

One of our walking groups
Where possible, twice daily yoga classes will be al fresco, on the large terrace overlooking the pool, surrounded by mountains. Otherwise, yoga will be enjoyed in the lovely studio near the swimming pool.

Morning yoga classes will be more energetic, but highly accessible and mindful, tailored for all levels, including complete beginners and those with an already-established practice. (Please note: this trip is not for you if you are looking for a vigorous yoga practice!).

Our teacher, Daniel Groom, is an experienced and highly trained, sensitive yoga teacher and yoga therapist (more about Daniel below).

Path to the main entrance
After the activity of the mornings, afternoons are your own, to swim in the hotel's large outdoor pool (note - pool is unheated); or rest, read, or plan more activities, until the very gentle evening yoga session before dinner!

Our wish is to create an environment where there is no pressure to join in, yet plenty of opportunity to do so, with the combination of walking, yoga, companionship and great food acting as a powerful tonic for body and soul.

The flavour of this break will be enhanced by a friendly, small-group feel, with a maximum of 14 guests. These trips attract a high proportion of solo travellers, so if you are considering coming alone, you will be in good company, with plenty of opportunity to socialise at mealtimes, and during walks, as well as to enjoy time alone.

The venue: our own Berber castle!

View from the terrace
Our very special Kasbah (modelled in the style of an ancient Berber castle), is a true retreat. Siting on its own hill-top, it is surrounded with astonishing panoramic mountain views and gardens.

From the outset, it was designed and built with the environment at the forefront, and is surrounded by five hectares of beautifully landscaped gardens, ripe with olives, almonds, figs and pomegranates.

Accommodation is comfortable and spacious, with a rustic feel, befitting the setting. Rooms (all en-suite) are designed with traditional Moroccan materials: cedar and eucalyptus wood, red sandstone, hand-made clay tiles, locally-made furniture with Berber motifs.

Daily Gentle Yoga and Meditation

Yoga on the Rooftop
Each morning, a reasonably active (though accessible) yoga class will stretch and enliven the body in preparation for our guided walk. Various options for more challenging poses will always be given, so that all levels of experience are catered for.

The evening's yoga and meditation class will be a far softer, reflective combination of gentle yoga, guided relaxation (yoga nidra) and meditation: the perfect wind-down after the day's activities!

In line with our ethos, yoga is taught as in a mindful, non-competitive, inclusive way, with complete beginners very welcome. Will not suit those  seeking a strong, physically demanding yoga practice.

Daily glorious mountain hikes from the door

Walking along a mountain path
All walks will start and end at our Kasbah, Over the course of the five days, our experienced local guide will take us through a varied landscape of villages, lush olive groves and mountain pathways with superlative views.

The hikes will be different each day and are always enjoyed straight from the door.

Please note that the terrain can be steep and reasonably challenging at times. You should be in good health and have moderate fitness levels.

Locally sourced, organic food

Delicious, home cooked food.
Where possible, our meals are locally sourced from the Kasbah gardens, super-fresh and seasonal. We offer a delicious veggie buffet for lunch and a selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals in the evening.

Breakfast is a mixture of a buffet selection of breads, cereals, fruits, Berber or scrambled eggs, teas and coffees.

Lunch is typically served buffet style - a selection of salads and vegetarian tagines are served, and eaten (weather permitting), al-fresco.

Each afternoon, tea, coffee and home made cake is served. This is a particular favourite for many of the guests! The delicious cakes are made on-site. Dinner is served a la carte - guests are asked to choose from a daily menu, which is then served after the evening class.

All meals are wholesome, home cooked and typically Moroccan, sourced from the organic gardens where possible. The Kasbah uses trusted local cooks whose training and influence has been handed down through generations.

Please note: unfortunately we are unable to cater for special dietary requirements such as gluten or dairy free.
