Our top six favourite places to eat in Marrakech

Marrakech Jemaa el-Fnaa

We have been travelling to Marrakech now for over a decade and still feel excited by the exoticism and colour of the city, the carnival of everyday life. One of the things we love is that it just feels so different. People dress differently, the architecture is different, the light and colours, the food.

Ah, the food! Here's a thing: Marrakech's food scence is transforming quickly, and is especially inspired by French and Italian influence. If you go to the right place, you'll be amazed by what you find - a cuisine that is fresh, local and rich in flavour, yet increasingly tinged with other influences.

As with any city, eating well is about knowing where to go - Marrakech is no exception to this rule. Frequently, guests on our retreats will tag extra days on to their holiday and one of most common questions is, without doubt: "can you recommend a good restaurant?".

With this in mind, we have formulated a list of our favourites - places we like to eat and places we recommend to our guests.

Le Jardin - A gorgeous restaurant serving french / moroccan food in the heart of the souks. A real oasis in such a busy area.

Cafe spice - Just off 'spice square' a couple of minutes walk from Jmaa el Fna square. This place is very popular, elegant and stylish. If you can try to sit on the roof terrace and watch the world go by

The Indian at Les Jardin de la Koutoubia - If you fancy something a little different and a change from Tagines, this is a lovely restaurant at the top of the Les Jardin de la Koutoubia hotel. Quite a high end restaurant, this is not your average curry house. Think fine dining india food

Cafe Bazaar - Near Bab Laksour, this is one of our favourite restaurants. Again, if you can eat on the terrace do so. They serve very moroccan food. It is well priced, good quality food. Very friendly staff

Dar Cherifa - Our all time favourite for lunch ( not open in the evening ) this beautiful old riad serves the most exotic selection of food taken a contemporary twist on traditional moroccan cuisine to provide a contemporary elegant menu.

Cafe de la poste - The one makes our list based on atmosphere alone - it is chic and sophisticated. This colonial cafe (and old post office), is a great place to lunch and watch the life of Marrakech new town. Food is expensive.
